I'm reminded of an epitaph quoted in Jan Morris' Oxford Book of Oxford, for a young man who had been admitted to the university but died before he could matriculate:

"He was the first in his class, and we hope not the last in Heaven, whither he went instead of to Oxford."

I love it.

It reminds me of the Harvard tendency to carve dates on buildings and gates that say, "Built in the 1846th year of Our Lord, in the 210th year of Harvard." It always seems to me that they aren't sure which is more illustrious.
