Another Tough Name

Here's another perfectly fine 18th-century name that would cause problems on a modern American playground: Gayer Coffin.

From the Boston Birth Records.

Out-of-style names combined with irregular spelling can also be problematic.

In a document recording deaths in London during the eighteenth century I came across the name Mergatroyd. This was the word my Mom used as an expletive when I was little. I don't know anything about its history (haven't looked yet), but it is one that always makes me laugh. I enjoy your blog; keep it up!
