These stones are always so poignant, counting the months, weeks, and days of a child's life; I've seen ones for days-old infants where the hours are counted. Somehow nothing conveys grief like this small detail.

There's a stone here in Newport, RI in the Common Burying Ground for the unnamed son of Christopher and Elizabeth Almy, who died on October 2, 1722 in, as the epitaph tells it, "the 6 hour of his Age." The Almys didn't have much luck with children; next to this one are two other stones for child deaths, young Christopher in 1725 at 6 months, and William in 1724 at 10 months. Being a parent back then had to be tough!
