A beautiful little stone, one I think I've seen reproduced somewhere else, too. The little winged faces on the shoulders make the design especially delightful.
Robert Long, one of the early settlers of Charlestown, had been an innkeeper not far from London, and he immigrated to Massachusetts in 1635 with his whole family, including 10 (!) children ranging in age from 20 years to 8 months. Zechariah, named on the stone, was 4.
Ten kids on a months-long trans-Atlantic sailing voyage; what would we give for a recording of their conversations.
For the record, I just happened to discover that her maiden name was Tidd, certainly a connection of John Tidd (or Tedd or Todd), the immigrant settler of Woburn. She's my 10th-great aunt.
