Another minor typographical observation: most any ordinary gravestone carved in 1835 would have used new-style numerals, but this monument uses the old-style numerals that would have been current in 1775.

The fact that designers are conscious of such a distinction can be seen in most any graphical representation of the date "1776" which is almost always shown in old-style numerals -- they stand as an historical indicator: we don't mean just the year 1776, we mean 1776.
