Gravestone of the Day

James and Davis Manson, 1830 and 1831, Scituate, MA
In memory of
JAMES MANSON,
who was drowned
Sept. 1, 1830;
aged 5 yrs. & 11 ms.
also
DAVIS J. MANSON,
who was drowned
Sept. 9, 1831;
aged 11 years.
sons of Nehemiah &
Mercy Manson.
In midst of life we are in death.

I don't know much more than the information on the stone. I was able to track down a genealogy for the family. It notes that Davis "drowned at sea" when he was 11. Was he a cabin boy? Was he out fishing with a friend? I don't know. His father and all his surviving brothers were sea captains, so it is possible that he was actually on a voyage.

Also of note: the genealogy says that their father, Nehemiah, died in 1832 at age 71. That means he was 69 when his youngest child, Hannah, was born.
