Today, we honor the man who was born to be a Confederate general,Born in South Carolina during the Nullification Crisis, States Rights was a member of the illustrious Gist clan who, unsurprisingly, supported secession. His cousin, William Henry Gist, was governor of South Carolina in 1860 and led the secession movement.
